What Is the EMREE Exam?

EMREE is the medical residency entrance examination administered through the National Institute for Health Specialties (NIHS) and UAE University.

The examination assesses whether candidates have the medical knowledge and clinical decision-making ability expected before entering intensive postgraduate residency training.

NIHS describes EMREE as a qualifying examination. Passing the examination allows an applicant to satisfy an important residency-entry requirement, but passing EMREE does not by itself guarantee a residency position.

Individual residency programmes and participating health authorities may apply additional eligibility and selection requirements.

EMREE vs UAE Medical Licensing Exams

A doctor seeking UAE residency training should therefore investigate the residency programme's specific admission requirements rather than assuming that a professional medical licence or licensing examination automatically replaces EMREE.

EMREE Eligibility and Requirements

According to the NIHS/UAEU examination process information, EMREE is open to eligible medical graduates and final-year medical students who satisfy the residency-training application criteria of the relevant UAE health authorities.

The official eligibility page includes UAE nationals and other nationalities who meet its criteria. The official FAQ prefers Emirates ID for identification and requires a valid passport from candidates without UAE residency. Check the live registration instructions for required records; internship, graduation-recency and other programme requirements must be confirmed separately with the intended residency provider.

EMREE Exam Format and Blueprint

NIHS/UAEU states that EMREE usually consists of 120 multiple-choice questions completed within three hours.

The examination is normally computer-based, although the official examination-structure information notes that a paper format may be used if circumstances require it.

The level is intended to reflect the medical knowledge and clinical skills expected of a graduate with at least one year of training.

The official November 2025 EMREE blueprint provides a suggested specialty distribution for the examination. NIHS/UAEU states that the distribution may vary by ±5% in each category.

This suggested distribution means strong preparation should not consist only of ultra-difficult cases. Candidates also need to be highly accurate on common clinical presentations and standard diagnostic and management decisions.

The NIHS/UAEU website states that the minimum passing mark is determined periodically using a standard-setting process.

How Many Times Can You Take EMREE?

Under the current published rules, eligible candidates may take the residency entrance examination up to three times within an academic year to obtain a passing score.

Once a candidate achieves a passing score, further attempts to improve the mark are not permitted within that same academic year.

The NIHS/UAEU current-cycle information also states that candidates who passed a residency entrance examination in a previous academic year are granted only one additional opportunity to retake the examination.

EMREE Exam Fees

For the listed 2025–26 cycle, the official schedule publishes AED 1,000 excluding tax. Confirm the fee for the next available sitting during official registration; do not assume a past-cycle amount applies unchanged.

Official information also states that examination fees are non-refundable.

Once enrolled for a particular examination date, candidates should not assume they can transfer the payment or freely move to another sitting. Check the current NIHS registration rules before confirming a booking.

How to Register for EMREE

Use the official NIHS/UAEU registration page. Creating an account does not reserve an exam seat: log in and enroll in a sitting only when its enrollment window is active.

EMREE Exam Dates 2026 and 2027

EMREE 2026 — published dates are now past

Checked on 8 October 2026: the official portal still displays the 2025–26 cycle. Its physician schedule lists the following 2026 examination dates:

• January: 4 and 18 January 2026.
• February: 1 and 15 February 2026.
• March: 1, 8, 14, 15, 22 and 28 March 2026.
• June: 14 June 2026 — the last listed physician sitting; enrollment ended 9 June 2026.

These are historical scheduled dates, not open booking opportunities. All listed enrollment windows have closed, and the checked schedule lists no further 2026 physician dates. Check the official examination schedule for new announcements.

EMREE 2027 — official schedule not found

No official 2027 EMREE dates were found in the NIHS/UAEU sources checked on 8 October 2026. Official 2027 EMREE dates should be confirmed from the responsible authority once published. Do not plan around a calendar predicted from previous cycles.

How EMREE Results Are Reported

According to NIHS/UAEU, candidates receive an electronic statement of results showing their score and ranking.

Results are normally provided within 10 working days of the examination.

The official results page states that results are valid for 24 months from submission to the relevant authorities.

How to Prepare for EMREE

A practical preparation sequence is:

1. Understand the official blueprint.

5. Move progressively to mixed-specialty questions.
6. Use timed practice.
7. Complete full-length simulations.
8. Review every meaningful error.
9. Target recurrent weaknesses before the examination.

Phase 1 — Build Your Clinical Foundation

Review high-yield concepts across all seven official disciplines.

Do not devote most of your time only to Internal Medicine simply because it feels larger. Its official blueprint weight is 20%.

Phase 2 — Topic-Based MCQs

Use targeted MCQs immediately after reviewing each system or specialty. Every wrong answer should identify a specific knowledge or reasoning gap.

Phase 3 — Mixed Clinical MCQs

Once your foundations improve, start mixing subjects. This trains rapid switching between clinical contexts.

Phase 4 — Timed Examination Practice

With 120 questions in three hours, the average available time is approximately 90 seconds per question.

Timed practice should train you to answer straightforward questions efficiently and avoid allowing one difficult vignette to consume disproportionate time.

Phase 5 — Error-Based Revision

Classify errors into categories such as:

• Knowledge gap
• Missed clue
• Wrong diagnostic test
• Incorrect initial management
• Priority error
• Drug-choice error
• Patient-safety error
• Ethics or communication error

Your weakest error category should influence your next study block.

Example Eight-Week EMREE Study Framework

This is only a framework. Candidates with weaker foundations may require additional time, while recently graduated candidates may progress faster.

What Resources Does NIHS Recommend?

NIHS/UAEU states that it does not prescribe one compulsory set of textbooks. Its official learning-resource page indicates that material used for comparable medical screening examinations, including USMLE Step 2-type preparation, can provide an appropriate level of study.

Candidates should avoid trying to read several large textbooks from cover to cover immediately before EMREE.

Clinical decision-making improves through active application, not reading alone.

5. Waiting Too Long to Take Timed Tests

Time management is a trainable examination skill.
