Important 2026 update: NExT is not operational
The National Medical Commission states in its current 2026 FAQ that the National Exit Test (NExT) is not operational at present. The NMC explains that NExT is intended, when implemented, to serve licensing and postgraduate functions and replace examinations such as the Screening Test/FMGE and NEET-PG as prescribed by applicable regulations.
For current candidates, do not assume that FMGE or NEET-PG has already been replaced by NExT. Always follow the latest NMC and NBEMS notices applicable to your examination cycle.

FMGE remains an active examination in 2026. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) conducted the June 2026 FMGE session and subsequently published the results.
FMGE is part of the screening and registration pathway applicable to eligible candidates who obtained their primary medical qualification outside India. Passing FMGE should not be described as automatically granting a medical licence; successful candidates must also satisfy the applicable registration and credential requirements.
Candidates should use the current NBEMS Information Bulletin for eligibility, documentation, examination scheme and administrative requirements because these details may change between sessions.

National Exit Test (NExT): current 2026 status
NExT was established in the National Medical Commission framework as a future common examination intended to have licensing and postgraduate-admission functions.
However, the National Medical Commission's current 2026 FAQ states explicitly that NExT is not operational at present.
This distinction is important for candidates. Websites and study resources should not imply that NExT has already replaced FMGE or NEET-PG unless and until the responsible authorities officially implement it.
NEET-PG and other postgraduate entrance examinations
Medical postgraduate admission is a different objective from licensing or screening. Candidates should select preparation based on the postgraduate institution and programme for which they are applying.
NEET-PG
NBEMS continues to conduct NEET-PG in 2026 for postgraduate medical admission. Candidates should consult the current NBEMS bulletin for eligibility, application deadlines, exam format and counselling information.

INI-CET
Candidates seeking postgraduate admission to participating Institutes of National Importance may encounter the INI-CET route. This is a postgraduate entrance pathway and should not be confused with FMGE medical-registration screening.
Candidates should confirm the applicable session and requirements directly through the official AIIMS examination portal.
Foreign Dental Screening Test (FDST)
Foreign-trained dental candidates may need the Foreign Dental Screening Test under the applicable regulatory pathway.
The National Dental Commission reported FDST examinations for BDS, MDS and postgraduate diploma pathways during 2026, with NBEMS conducting the examination components.
Because eligibility depends on the candidate's qualification and regulatory circumstances, candidates should verify their exact requirements with the National Dental Commission and current NBEMS examination notices.
Nursing and pharmacy registration in India
Avoid assuming that every Indian healthcare profession has a national exam equivalent to FMGE. Registration structures vary substantially between professions.
Nursing
The Indian Nursing Council establishes national standards for nursing education, while registration processes involve State Nursing Registration Councils and the national Nurse Registration and Tracking System.
Candidates should verify the recognition of their nursing qualification and the requirements of the relevant State Nursing Registration Council.

Pharmacy
The Pharmacy Council of India establishes applicable education and qualification standards, while pharmacist registration is handled through State Pharmacy Councils under the Pharmacy Act framework.

Postgraduate pharmacy entrance examinations such as GPAT have a different purpose from professional registration.
